Maintenance on Oak Ridge public warning sirens begins Nov. 3
OAK RIDGE, Tenn — Personnel will be performing preventive maintenance on the public warning siren system in the Oak Ridge area throughout the week of Nov. 3, 2025.
During that week, people in the area may occasionally hear audio from individual sirens in the vicinity of Y‑12 National Security Complex.
The sirens are strategically placed to notify the public in the unlikely event of an on-site emergency that has impacts beyond the site boundary.
Y-12 teams recognized with Defense Programs Awards of Excellence
OAK RIDGE, Tenn — The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recognized four teams at Y‑12 National Security Complex with Defense Programs Awards of Excellence, which were celebrated recently during an on‑site ceremony. The winning teams contributed to national security by meeting or exceeding the mission criteria established for the sites.
Y-12 inventors recognized for patents, transferring technology
Several Y‑12 employees were honored for contributing to the site’s success in technology transfer, including several patents.
Y-12 accepting STEM classroom grant applications
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) is sponsoring a $5,000 grant for a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classroom project. The goal of the grant, designated for grades K–12, is to foster advancement of STEM activities in the classroom and to help develop Y-12’s future workforce. CNS manages and operates the Y-12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Jellico Elementary School wins student manufacturing competition
Y-12 to conduct emergency exercise Wednesday, June 4
OAK RIDGE, Tenn — Emergency response personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Y‑12 National Security Complex’s managing and operating contractor, Consolidated Nuclear Security, along with other federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency exercise on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in and around the Y‑12 plant.
Monthly siren test rescheduled to June 2
OAK RIDGE, Tenn — Monthly testing of the public notification sirens in Oak Ridge has been rescheduled to Monday, June 2.
Warning sirens are placed around Oak Ridge’s three major sites — the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y‑12 National Security Complex, and East Tennessee Technology Park. In the unlikely event of an off‑site emergency, sirens will sound to alert area residents.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Bechtel-led Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC, (CNS) the management and operating contractor of the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, has joined with its parent company to donate money in support of victims and communities in recovery from damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Helene in upper East Tennessee.

Two groups recognized for continuous improvement
A key principle at Y‑12 is continuous improvement — one of 11 principles that reflect the site’s commitment to being a learning organization. Twice a year, the Performance Improvement group asks Y‑12 organizations to submit projects to be included in its “Continuous Improvement Celebration.” There, each team shares its successes, and employees vote for the Best Y‑12 Initiative and Best Value Stream Element Teams Initiative.
This year’s recent celebration included 14 projects — 10 Y‑12 initiatives and 4 VSET initiatives.
